Yangzhou Culture

The history of Yangzhou continues to weave itself into the culture here. In 486BC when Wu, the Emperor of the State, ordered the creation of the Hangou River and Hancheng City, it set into motion 2,500 years of history. It saw the prosperity of the East and West Han Dynasties, Sui Dynasty, and even the Tang Dynasty. 

Many well-known scholars and poets come from Yangzhou, plus there are hundreds upon hundreds of historic sites to behold. What to Eat in Yangzhou

The cuisine here is very characteristic of both the Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces. Rich broths and an emphasis on top-quality ingredients are in order to maintain the careful composition of the dishes here. You’ll find the dishes to be braised, stewed, or roasted in technique.

Among the favorites, stewed pork balls and stewed fish heads top the list. Shredded pork in chicken soup, stewed pig’s feet, and steamed herring are other delights you will most certainly want to sample. It’s very unique from other regions in China.

Things to Do in Yangzhou

Slender West Lake was named from a poem comparing it to West Lake. Slender, as the name suggests, it is a much smaller width across at just about 2.5 miles. With a national park that brings in historic and cultural relics to round out the experience amid classical gardens, it’s a popular place for locals and tourists alike. 

The ancient style of this city means there are unique opportunities to explore the many gardens and monuments. Daming Temple is one you’ll want to see, while both Ge Yuan and He Yuan gardens are ideal for peaceful retreats.
